An Easy Way To Lose Weight - NOT!: The Truth Behind Diet Pills

Of all the “miracle ways” of losing weight being advertised right now, perhaps the one that really deserves the title of being an easy way to lose weight is the diet pill. Think about it! What can be a more easy way to lose weight other than taking a little pill several times a day, then sitting back and relaxing. You can lose weight while virtually doing nothing! You can still eat whatever you want (read: ice cream, potato chips, and cookies), watch television all day, and still look like you’re hitting the gym like a pro.

Is this really an easy way to lose weight? Well, theoretically, yes. In theory, diet pills work one of two ways. It can either release fat-burning chemicals into your body, or it can suppress your appetite. However, you should put your brakes on before you go to your local drugstore and buy some of these “miracle” pills. Whether they’re OTC or prescription, chemical or the so-called “herbal”, they still have a dark underside lurking beneath that glittering façade. They may be an easy way to lose weight, but at what cost?

Prescription Drugs

These are the ones that are regulated by the FDA (that's Food and Drug Authority to you!), and most likely contain synthetic chemicals. They can either work on your stomach or on your brain, making it seem like you have no appetite for food. It’s an easy way to lose weight, but think about this: the use of prescription drugs have to be greatly regulated and monitored, as you can easily overdose on them.

So those of you who are thinking of speeding up their weight loss program by popping an extra pill or two, don’t. Other side effects include fever, hair loss, chest pain, diarrhea, and impotence. An easy way to lose weight? Yes. A good one? No.

OTC Pills and “Herbal” Supplements

The problem with these two is that they are classified as food supplements rather than drugs, so their use is generally not regulated. Since they are not regulated, they do not go through the same tests and procedures by the FDA to test their public consumption safety. Usually, they do not have any dosage or labeling requirements that prescription drugs are bound by law to have.

While they claim to be “natural” and “healthy”, it’s not uncommon for people to take multiple pills, or even multiple brands, at the same time since they don’t have the same restrictions. This causes the body to take in a massive cocktail of ingredients, which, in turn, can cause side effects such as tremors, high blood pressure, anxiety attacks, and even in worst cases, heart failure. Another easy way to lose weight? Yes. Another bad one? Yes.

So What’s the Bottom Line?

If you’re simply asking whether or not diet pills work and if they are an easy way to lose weight, then the answer is yes. With proper diet, exercise, and medical supervision, diet pills can work, but mostly for a short term only.

A human body can easily adjust to the new levels of chemicals in its system and the weight can come back once it has. Once that happens, the easy way to lose weight you were looking for is gone. But you should never, ever take diet pills without consulting your doctor, as it can result in serious and adverse effects on your health. In the end, don’t only look for an easy way to lose weight, also look for a safe and effective one.
